Honoring Ma: The Timeless Lessons of a Jersey Mother

Celebrating the Unique Wisdom of Mothers: A Tribute to Ma

As we gather to celebrate Mother’s Day, I can’t help but reflect on the one-of-a-kind woman who brought me into this world. I never called her “Mother” or “Mom,” but I always knew her simply as Ma. Like many mothers, she had her own unique way of imparting wisdom, often drawing from her personal "Book of Ma" filled with memorable sayings that have stuck with me over the years.

The Minimalist Approach to Gifts

Ma had a distinct disdain for material possessions. In her eyes, the clutter of trinkets was unnecessary, and she took pride in her minimalist lifestyle long before it became a trend. When faced with the question of what she wanted for holidays or special occasions, her response was invariably a dismissive, “Nuthin’. Every Day’s the Same as the Next.”

This mantra encapsulated her philosophy: “If I Can’t Eat It, Wear It, or Spend It, I Don’t Want It.” It was a reminder that experiences and relationships far outweigh material gifts in terms of significance. In a world obsessed with consumerism, Ma's perspective is refreshingly grounded.

Alcohol and Family Gatherings

As she aged, the social dynamics of our family gatherings shifted, largely influenced by her newfound appreciation for a well-crafted martini. My nephew discovered that a cold drink waiting for her upon arrival was the golden ticket to ensuring her presence at family events. It was a clever strategy that kept her engaged and happy, highlighting how even the most steadfast of individuals could adapt their preferences for the sake of family.

Conversely, my love for soda often vexed her. I recall the days when I would guzzle down a half-gallon of Coke, leaving her frustrated when she craved a sip. Ma’s response was practical—she’d hide her stash of soda in her closet, reflecting her resourceful nature. “Not Taking Any Chances,” she’d say, a testament to her ever-watchful eye.

Dating Advice: The Ma Way

When it came to my dating life, Ma's feedback was often cryptic. She never openly praised my partners until they were long gone. Instead, her favorite saying, “I Never Judge on First Impressions,” often masked her true feelings, which I came to realize were more critical than she let on. It was her way of being diplomatic, always waiting for the right moment to share her thoughts.

One particular instance remains etched in my memory: her strong disapproval of a friend from the neighborhood. When Ma offered to fly me home on the condition that I didn’t see Wendy, it was clear that she meant business. “I Don’t Bargain,” she asserted, showcasing her determination and protective instincts.

The Curmudgeon Grandmother

As a grandmother, Ma embraced her role with a unique blend of skepticism and pride. She often claimed, “I Raised My Kids,” which seemed to imply that babysitting wasn’t on her agenda. Yet, her love for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren was undeniable, expressed in her own way. She believed that accomplishments mattered more than mere reproduction. “Anyone Can Procreate. But Getting a Degree is a Real Accomplishment,” she would say, emphasizing the importance of education.

In her later years, she softened, beaming with pride over her growing family. The arrival of her first great-great-grandchild seemed to ignite a spark in her, reminding us all of the enduring legacy she created through her strength, honesty, and humor.

A Legacy of Strength

This Mother’s Day, I find solace in knowing that her spirit lives on through the generations. My niece, Emily, has stepped into the role of a mother herself, poised to craft her own Book of Ma. As I look at my niece’s daughter, little Addie, I see the unmistakable spark of Ma’s personality in her bright eyes. It is a promise that the wisdom of my mother will carry on, reminding us to face life with strength and authenticity.

So, on this day dedicated to mothers everywhere, I hope that Ma's legacy inspires not just my family but all of us to embrace life with the same tenacity and heart. Here’s to the women who shape us, challenge us, and love us fiercely, no matter the distance or time that separates us.
